severe acquired brain injury case study

“Without coming to Askham she wouldn’t be where she is today, everyone has been so friendly and helpful it’s an amazing place.”

– Family member of Mrs B

Mrs B came to Askham for rehabilitation after suffering from a stroke. She received physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy. On arriving at Askham Mrs B was not independently mobile and was using the stand steady with assistance of two carers for all transfers. She also had right side weakness.

Mrs B needed assistance with all personal care and dressing with assistance of one carer. Mrs B slowly progressed to weight bearing and walking with a frame and then eventually using just a walking stick to walk independently. Mrs B is now able to safely and comfortably go up and down the stairs.

Mrs B practiced and continues to use speech therapy strategies during conversation to assist her thinking of the correct word needed and uses this independently. Mrs B can now carry out her own personal care; showering, dressing, some washing up and cooking with minimal assistance. Mrs B went home to her flat living independently with home care just in the mornings only and support from her partner.

Her partner added “without coming to Askham she wouldn’t be where she is today, everyone has been so friendly and helpful, it’s an amazing place”.
