At Askham Rehab, we see every rehabilitation journey as unique, shaped by the individual, their aspirations, and the expertise of our interdisciplinary team. One of the most remarkable examples of this is Deborah Weston, a 61-year-old who came to Askham following spinal surgery. Her story reflects the very heart of what we do: helping people rebuild independence, confidence, and quality of life after life-changing events.
Deborah’s journey: From surgery to starting again
Deborah was diagnosed with cervical myelopathy, caused by a 9mm mass at the C7/T1 region of her spine. Following a posterior decompressive laminectomy, she faced severe weakness across all four limbs, loss of mobility, difficulties with balance and fine motor skills, and emotional challenges including anxiety.
Her main goal was clear: to return home and live independently again.
Building a personalised rehabilitation plan
The Askham Rehab Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) – including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, neuropsychologists, rehabilitation nurses, and support workers – designed a comprehensive plan to support Deborah’s recovery. Together, they focused on three key areas:
1. Mobility and functional independence
-
On admission, Deborah relied on a wheelchair for longer distances
-
Over six weeks, she progressed to walking with a Fischer stick, eventually regaining full independence indoors and confidence for supervised community mobility
-
Her Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scores demonstrated steady improvements across multiple areas.
2. Emotional wellbeing and psychological support
-
Anxiety levels were addressed with mindfulness sessions and structured emotional support
-
Her Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scores improved, showing reduced stress and greater confidence
-
Deborah successfully joined community activities, boosting her social engagement and overall quality of life
3. Daily living and occupational therapy
-
With targeted occupational therapy, Deborah achieved her self-set rehabilitation goals, such as completing household tasks and personal care
-
She was able to return home without needing external care support
-
Her only ongoing goal at discharge was building greater confidence with outdoor mobility
Discharge and long-term independence
After weeks of structured therapy, Deborah was discharged home without a care package, fully independent in her daily life.
Her tailored discharge plan included:
-
Specialist equipment such as an ergonomic walking stick, perching stool, and kitchen trolley
-
Referrals to community-based neurorehabilitation for ongoing therapy
-
Fatigue management strategies to maintain balance in her day-to-day routine
Why this journey stands out
Deborah’s recovery illustrates why Askham Rehab’s interdisciplinary approach makes a difference. By uniting expertise across disciplines and keeping the resident’s goals at the centre, we help people:
- Achieve personalised, goal-driven outcomes
- Benefit from technology-enhanced therapy programmes
- Prepare for real-world reintegration beyond the rehabilitation unit
Her progress shows what can be achieved when determination meets expert, coordinated care.
Conclusion: Redefining recovery at Askham Rehab
Deborah’s transformation, from wheelchair use to walking freely and living independently, is more than just recovery. It is about regaining freedom, confidence, and quality of life.
At Askham Rehab, we are proud to stand alongside residents like Deborah, proving every day that independence is possible after life-changing conditions.
