Lower limb trauma pathway launch at Askham Rehab

We are pleased to share the launch of a new Lower Limb Trauma Pathway at Askham Rehab, developed in collaboration with Proactive Prosthetic and Orthotic Care and Beth Cordrey Occupational Therapy.

This new pathway has been designed to support individuals recovering from complex lower limb injuries through a more coordinated, person-centred and collaborative approach to rehabilitation.

As part of Askham Village Community, Askham Rehab continues to focus on bringing together expertise, innovation and community values to enhance outcomes and experiences for those we support.

A collaborative approach to lower limb trauma rehabilitation

The Lower Limb Trauma Pathway brings together a range of specialist disciplines, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and prosthetic and orthotic expertise. By working in partnership, the pathway creates a more joined-up rehabilitation journey, reducing gaps between services and ensuring individuals receive the right support at the right time.

This approach reflects a growing need within the sector for better coordination across rehabilitation services, particularly for individuals with complex injuries who require input from multiple specialists.

Alex Chapman, Orthotist at Proactive Prosthetic and Orthotic Care shared:

At Proactive, we see first‑hand how critical early, coordinated input is following complex lower limb trauma. Until now, there has been no structured pathway in this region that fully integrates prosthetic and orthotic expertise within the wider rehabilitation journey. This collaborative approach brings the right expertise together at the right time, allowing us to work closely with Askham Rehab and Beth Cordrey Occupational Therapy to provide more seamless, effective support that reflects the real needs and long‑term goals of each individual.

Beth Cordrey, Clinical Director and Consultant Occupational Therapist, also highlighted the importance of this collaboration:

Continuity is one of the most undervalued ingredients in rehabilitation, and the move from inpatient care back home is where it’s most often lost. This pathway builds in continuity by design: community-based occupational therapy works alongside the inpatient team from early in the admission, the home is prepared ahead of discharge, and the teams involved work as one rather than as separate services. For the client, it means their rehabilitation flows naturally from Askham into their home life.

Lyndsey Marie, Clinical Lead at Askham Rehab, reflected on the impact of this initiative:

This pathway represents a meaningful step forward in how we approach lower limb trauma rehabilitation. By working collaboratively across services, we are creating more consistent, connected and effective rehabilitation journeys.

It allows us to bring together the right expertise at the right time, while always keeping the individual’s goals, independence and quality of life at the centre.

This initiative reflects Askham Rehab’s ongoing commitment to:

  • innovation in neurorehabilitation
  • partnership working across services
  • delivering rehabilitation that is both clinically robust and person-centred

Looking ahead: A more connected rehabilitation journey
